Bell Kiowa Walkaround

Bell Kiowa A17-055 Army Avalon 2007

This Bell Kiowa walkaround shows one of the Australian Army 161 Recce Squadron birds on static display at Avalon in 2007. The ADF has had 64 Kiowas on strength over the years, 8 of these were leased from the US for operations in Vietnam while the Australian machines came on line. Several machines were rotated through RAN shipboard service as well. These had the low skids refitted and a rotor brake system installed to prevent the main rotor windmilling on deck. To facilitate escape, these RAN machines were flown without front doors when they were shipborne. Note in pic 11 that the avionics access hatch is offset slightly to starboard. This offset continues under the nose and the chin bubbles are different sizes.
